RiverHawks Announce New Youth Development Program |
 |
Spokane, WA
(January 15, 2010) – There’s little
doubt that baseball is becoming
increasingly more competitive. Each
year, the talent bar is raised and
players at all levels have to either
step up their game or risk falling
behind the competition. With the
establishment of the RiverHawks
Youth Development Program, however,
young players in the Inland
Northwest will now have a resource
that can help them maintain the kind
of competitive edge necessary to
excel in high school and beyond.
Through the Youth
Development Program, 13-18-year-old
players can participate in ongoing
instructional clinics that will be
put on throughout the year at venues
such as UDistrict and The Warehouse.
The clinics will focus on a wide
variety of skill areas as a way to
help young players sharpen their
abilities and improve their
performance on the field and off.
“These clinics
aren’t just about baseball skills.
We’re also going to emphasize
strength training, conditioning,
nutrition, even strategy,” said Irv
Zakheim, owner of the
RiverHawks. “Our
goal is to help kids develop into
complete athletes, not just good
baseball players.”
Nick Pupo, a
Spokane native and a long-time
member of the local baseball
community, will spearhead the
RiverHawks Youth Development
Program. Pupo is the owner of
Diamond Sports Performance and has
been a local baseball coach for more
than 20 years. He’s also been
involved as a professional scout
through the Lenny Randle Baseball
Academy.
“I’m very
excited to have this opportunity to
be part of a program that will
really help raise the level of play
in this area,” Pupo said. “Anyone
who’s been involved in baseball in
the Inland Northwest knows how much
raw potential we have here. This
program will finally allow us to
work together and help these kids
make the most of that potential.”
Through the
RiverHawks new Youth Development
Program, young baseball players will
have access to some of the best
coaches in the area and receive
upper level instruction that isn’t
available anywhere else. Among the
coaches who will conduct clinics for
the RiverHawks Youth Development
Program is Bump Wills. A Central
Valley graduate, Wills earned
All-American honors playing for
Arizona State before being drafted
by the Texas Rangers. He played for
the Rangers for four years before
joining the Chicago Cubs. Wills has
also spent 10 years as a member of
the Texas Ranger Minor League
Development program
“From our
coaches and our facilities to our
organizations and our players, the
Inland Northwest has some
outstanding baseball resources.”
Pupo said. “We just need to bring
them all together under one roof,
and the Youth Development Program
does that.”
The first
clinic is from 9-noon on Feb. 13 at
UDistrict and The Warehouse. The
clinic will focus on hitting,
conditioning and base running.
Registration from the clinic is $100
if submitted before Feb. 6, or $125
if submitted after. For more
information about this, or other
upcoming clinics, visit
